Wyze offers some cool services with its cameras topping the list. You can easily assemble a security system for a suburban, rural, or city dwelling from these Wyze cameras.
Sometimes a Wyze camera can malfunction and stop recording events, which is frustrating. But here’s how you fix it.
The Problem: Wyze cam not recording events. It offers no microSD data or live stream.
The Solution: There are three solutions that will solve this problem. Here they are in order of the most common occurrence.
- Refresh the camera using the soft reset button.
- Check for app for firmware updates.
- Double-check your motion detection feature settings and your scheduling options.
In rare cases, you need to reset the device by unplugging it and then waiting a moment and plugging it back into the outlet. The only exception is the outdoor camera that runs on a battery. You’ll need to replace the battery every six months.

Solution #1: Refresh The Wyze Camera Using the Soft Reset Button
The first solution to try when your Wyze camera isn’t recording events is to use the soft reset button. To do that, follow these 5 simple steps:
- Locate the soft reset button on the back of the Wyze camera. It is a small, circular button located next to the microSD card slot.
- Use a paperclip or similar tool to press and hold the soft reset button for 10-15 seconds. You should feel a slight click when you press the button.
- Release the button once you feel the click. The camera’s status light should begin flashing yellow, indicating that it is restarting.
- Wait for the camera to complete the restart process, which should take no more than a minute or two.
- Once the camera has restarted, you can check the Wyze app to ensure that it is connected and working properly.
By following these simple steps, you should be able to refresh your Wyze camera using the soft reset button.
Solution #2: Check Your Wyze Camera App for Firmware Updates
The second most common solution to Wyze cam not recording events is to ensure that the app’s firmware is up to date. To do that, follow these simple steps:
- Open the Wyze app on your mobile device and log in to your account.
- Tap on the camera you want to update to enter its live feed.
- Tap on the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen to access the camera’s settings.
- Scroll down to the “Device Info” section and tap on it.
- You will see the current firmware version of your Wyze camera. If there is a newer firmware available, you will see an “Update Available” message with the option to update.
- Tap on the “Update” button to start the firmware update process.
- Wait for the update to complete. The camera will restart automatically when the update is finished.
- To check for any app updates, go to the app store on your mobile device (Google Play Store for Android or App Store for iOS).
- Search for the Wyze app and see if there are any updates available.
- If there is an update available, tap on the “Update” button to download and install it.
- After installing the update, open the Wyze app and log in to your account.
- You may see a message that says “Firmware Update Required” for your Wyze camera. Tap on the message to update the camera firmware.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to update the firmware, and wait for the camera to restart.
- After the firmware and app updates are complete, your Wyze camera should be up-to-date and ready to use.
Note: It is always a good idea to keep your Wyze camera and app updated to ensure the best performance and security.
Solution #3: Double-Check Motion Detection and Scheduling Options
The third most common solution to Wyze cam not recording events is to check your motion detection feature settings and your scheduling options. To do that, follow these simple steps:
- Open the Wyze app on your smartphone or tablet and select the Wyze camera that you want to check.
- Tap on the “Settings” icon (gear icon) at the top right corner of the screen.
- Scroll down and tap on “Detection Settings”.
- Verify that “Motion Detection” is turned on.
- Adjust the “Sensitivity” slider to your desired level. If you want the camera to detect more motion, slide the sensitivity to the right. If you want it to detect less, slide it to the left.
- Enable “Detection Zones” if you want the camera to focus on a specific area for motion detection.
- Verify that “Notifications” is turned on, so you’ll receive notifications on your phone when motion is detected.
- Go back to the previous menu and select “Schedule” to set up a schedule for motion detection. Make sure that “Scheduled” is turned on, then choose the days and times when you want the camera to detect motion. For example, you may want to set it to detect motion only during the night or when you’re away from home.
- Once you’ve made the desired changes, tap “Save” to apply them.
How to Record Events on Wyze Camera
Recording with a Wyze camera requires setting a schedule, even if you want to record 24/7/52, such as when you use a Wyze outdoor camera as a trail cam or a security camera. To record with your camera, you need to set a schedule in Wyze’s mobile app. Here’s how to do that:
- In the Wyze app, tap “Home.”
- Tap the plus sign (+) in the top left-hand corner.
- Tap “Add Rule.”
- Choose “Schedule” in the list that appears.
- Choose the camera with which you want to record by tapping on it.
- Tap “Turn on motion detection” and tap “Next.”
- Tap the plus sign (+) next to the “Name” option.
- Name the schedule or recording topic.
- Tap Save.
- Set the schedule’s start time by tapping “Start Time.”
- Enter the desired time and tap “Save.”
- Repeat steps 10 and 11 using the “Add End Time” option.
Your camera should now record during the time period for which you’ve activated it.
How to Make Wyze Cam Record Longer
You have a few options to make your camera record for a longer period of time, depending on the issue. Here are the top ways to make it record longer.
- Edit your scheduled recording times. In the Wyze app, go to the Rules area that you used to set up your recording schedule. Tap the Schedule list and change the starting time or ending time for the camera’s schedule. You can set it to record 24 hours a day if you desire.
- If your camera stops recording because the scheduled times for the recording session fill its microSD card, you can upgrade your storage card to a larger size, up to the maximum size that the camera takes. This varies by camera because Wyze makes more than 20 options. You’ll need to check your camera’s owner’s manual to find out the size it can take.
Frequently Asked Questions
While you can own and set up an unlimited number of Wyze cameras, you can only have 30 connected at the same time to a Wi-Fi connection. You can watch them one at a time on a computer or your TV or in the mobile app or you can group them in the app to view them simultaneously.
Here’s how you can group them to view them en masse using the Wyze app:
- In the Wyze app, tap “Home.”
- Tap the plus sign (+) in the top left-hand corner.
- Tap “Add Device Group.”
- Choose “Camera Group” from the list of choices by tapping on it. (You can group any type of product Wyze makes, but we’re focused on cameras so let’s stick with that.)
- Enter a group name in the blank at the top of the screen.
- Tap next to each camera you want to add to the group. The list on the group creation screen will display every camera you have.
- Tap “Done” to finish creating your group.
Now, when you want to check that group of cameras, for instance, the ones installed to view your front lawn and driveway, you simply tap the group name from the Wyze app’s home screen. It opens all of the cameras in that group and plays them all as live streams on the same screen.
It depends on which model of Wyze camera you purchased. In the summer of 2020, the company began manufacturing wireless cameras that run on batteries. These batteries last for about six months before you need to replace them. The company now offers both wired and wireless cameras. Its outdoor cameras connect wirelessly to a base station, which enhances their range. The original Wyze security cameras and doorbell cameras still use the wired design. You need a standard electrical outlet to plug them into for use.
It makes sense to share access to the security cameras at your home with your spouse and other adults. If you have a household staff, such as a housekeeper or nanny, you might want to provide them access to the cameras, especially if they’re frequently home alone or with small children.
The Wyze app offers an easy way to share access to your cameras. You can choose to share one camera or a group. Here’s how to do it:
- Open the Wyze app.
- Tap on the “Account Tab” option.
- Tap on the “Sharing” option.
- Tap on the plus sign (+).
- Tap on the “Share with a new user” button. You’ll find it located at the bottom of the screen.
- Enter the email address of the individual with whom you want to share the cameras.
- Tap on the magnifying glass icon.
- Tap on the “Share” button. You’ll also find this button at the bottom of the screen.
This sends an email invitation to the individual so they can set up a Wyze Account if they don’t already have one. As a shared user, the individuals will only have access to the Event Videos section and the camera’s live stream. They won’t be able to alter the camera’s settings or view your micro Sd card footage.
You can access your Wyze cloud storage at any time using the Wyze mobile app. Tap on the “Events” tab to view clips recorded by your camera when you programmed it to record. If it records constantly, you can view 12-second clips of the action on your Events tab. Click the arrow pointing down icon to download a video. Video gets stored to the cloud for 14 days.
You can set up a Wyze camera to record 24/7. Use a microSD card in your Wyze Cam to record continuous footage. Let’s go over the steps to do this.
- Choose a microSD card with at least 8 GB of memory. Wyze makes compatible SD cards. If you want to use your own card, you’ll need a Class 10 card in FAT32 or exFAT format. Using a FAT32 SD card, you can use 8 GB, 16 GB, or 32 GB cards. Using an exFAT SD card, you can install an SD card of 64 GB, 128 GB, or 256 GB.
- Unplug the Wyze Camera before inserting or changing or removing a microSD card.
- Insert the microSD card into the slot on the bottom of the Wyze Cam. Some camera designs use a slot located beneath a silicone flap.
- Plug the camera back into its power outlet.
- Listen for a “ding.” When inserted properly, the microSD card signals you with this “ding” to let you know everything worked. (If there’s no sound, unplug the camera, remove the SD card, reinsert it, and plug in the camera again. Repeat this until you hear the “ding.”)
- Format the microSD card in the Wyze Cam. This erases any data already on the card. Formatting the card takes place in the mobile app.
- Open the Wyze app.
- Tap the camera’s live stream on the Home screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Advanced Settings.
- Tap Manage MicroSD Card.
- Choose “Format.”
- Set your camera to record continuously using the microSD card.
- Return to the Home screen.
- Tap the camera’s livestream.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Advanced.
- Locate the “Record to MicroSD Card” option and tap the adjoining toggle to activate this option.
- Choose from the Events Only recording or Continuous recording. Events Only option activate the camera via a motion sensor. The continuous recording option records every second.
You did it! You can watch short clips in your Events tab or switch out your SD card to view the one with recordings on it on your mobile device or TV.
Yes, you can use a Wyze Camera Outdoor unit in “Travel Mode” without an internet connection. You need to enable it before leaving home using either its Base Station or the camera.
